How to go from Spain to Morocco?

There are many ferry and air routes connecting Spain and Morocco. Different prices, frequency and duration mean that there is always an option to suit any search. Even so, I advise booking in advance, as prices go up in high season and availability is limited!

Traveling by ferry

Although some may think that going from Europe to Africa by ferry is an eccentric idea, I consider this choice as the most optimal for several reasons:

  1. It is the most environmentally friendly alternative; a flight for this route can involve up to 130 kg of CO2 per km and passenger, while the ferry emits 18 g of CO2 per km and passenger… A difference to take into account!
  2. It is the most economically advantageous option. You can find trips for up to 12 € / person.
  3. Ferries do not have a restrictive luggage policy – no maximum weights or measurements for your luggage! What’s more, most companies do not require you to check in suitcases or hand luggage and, if you travel with your own vehicle, your luggage stays inside your car.
  4. Last but not least is the romantic part of crossing the Strait of Gibraltar. The unique experience of traveling between two continents, feeling the winds of Aeolus, will take you back to the world of Hercules and the sea of Ulysses, capturing panoramic views that you will never forget.

Spain and Morocco have several ports that serve as a bridge between the two countries. In addition, there are many companies, including FRS, Balearia, Transmediterránea or Inter Shipping, which operate to make the different routes. Thus, the combinations multiply.

Regarding Melilla and Ceuta, do not forget that even being in the African continent they are Spanish cities. Thus, the entry requirements will be the same as those in mainland Spain.

Traveling by plane

It comes to be the most common option as it is considered the easiest due to the degree of familiarity we have, what traveling soul has not taken a flight, but there are other advantages to consider:

  1. It is the safest means of transportation that exists and that is so.
  2. It is very fast; it travels long distances in a short time, which makes us enjoy the destination more. I recommend it for those trips longer than 300 km.
  3. It is comfortable and entertaining. In many of the flights, some of the companies offer multiple on-board entertainment options.
  4. Last but not least, I can’t forget to mention the views you can enjoy if the seat you are assigned is next to the window. Super!

The fact that there are many airlines (traditional and low cost) as well as airports, both in Spain and Morocco, makes the options almost endless. So, I will focus on the direct routes that I find most interesting.

For both ferry and plane, when planning a trip, I advise doing a real-time search to get the most updated information, since, with the COVID situation, some routes are restricted and others cancelled. Also, it may happen that, due to inclement weather, some ferries suffer schedule variations on the same day. On these occasions the usefulness of having contracted the services with a tour operator is key, as they will be able to reorganize the trip before you find out about these schedule changes.
